Auditions
for Non-Paying
Projects |
(Updated 05.06.2008)
"Leonard
Nimoy once said, "Theatre is food for the soul".
Having "left the theatre" some 30 years ago,
I decided to return once more and share in the feast.
I didn't have a clue where to start and a friend recommended
AASD. I was overwhelmed by the organization and professionalism
that greeted me. I was treated like I had just finished
my last show and they were there to help me with the
next. Theatre in San Diego has changed so much in the
past 30 years and AASD provides an integral part of keeping
people abreast of what's going on. I was recently cast
in 'Convention Celebration' at 6th at Penn. I can say
without hesitation, AASD made that possible."
Patrick Hubbard, AASD Member since
2004 |

Seeking
three male leads. One about seventeen. Needs
to look enough like the younger version of the character
to be convincing. Tan skin, dark hair. and must be very strong
in his acting. Also looking for two male leads that
range from their late twenties to early thirties. See below
for details on the characters.
Timothy Carter Banning: (Seventeen years old) Lisa's gay cousin
who was beaten regularly by his father at a young age, and
moves in with Lisa for his senior year of highschool. He is
a very opinionated, stubborn, teenager. He is Lisa's heartache,
his journey of growing up keeps Chris close in mind, as she
watches Timmy make similar mistakes. Timmy learns the weight
of responsibility, and reality through the coarse of the film.
Is beated by his boyfriend/director after falling into an unstable,
abusive, underage relationship.
Chase Cole Portman: (Late twenties/early thirties) Timmy's
director/boyfriend. A bitter, cynical man, who is self absorbed
and tainted with the lack of commitment. He is a short tempered,
violent man with intensions of sexual pleasure without the
strings attatched. He beats Timmy.
Mark Lawerence: (Late twenties/early thirties) A pompous,
egotistical alpha male. Who loves to hear himself talk. His
harsh, inhumane comments phase him as funny, rather than
blunt and mean. He is the cause for Lisa's bulimia, and Chris's
death. He blackmails Lisa to sleep with him, inorder to salvage
her career.

Seeking:
Young performers of all ethnicities
aged 6-17. Seeking strong singers/actors for principal
roles. Also seeking African-American female performers
who can sing gospel for one of the principal music numbers.
This is a show which features a lot of dance. We are seeking
lots of youngsters for “Tom Sawyer’s
Gang.” Note: We will consider females for male roles!
ABOUT THE SHOW:
“Big River, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” originated
in its current form right here in San Diego at the La Jolla
Playhouse in the mid 1980’s. Under the direction of
the legendary Des McAnuff, “Big River” went on
to Broadway where it won 7 Tony Awards including “Best
Musical.” Set in the early 19th century, the story
tells the classic Mark Twain tale of the wild and independent
Huckleberry Finn and his escapades along the Mississippi
river. Huck is joined by his friend, the runaway slave “Jim” who
wants to escape to freedom. The story is full of humor, adventure
and humanity; and the score boasts some of the best solos
and duets in musical theatre.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:
California Youth Conservatory Theatre
is casting for the Summer production of “Big River, the Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn." We are seeking young performers
of all types for this fun and memorable musical. We double-cast
all principal roles with a Youth Cast (elementary and middle-school)
and a Young Actors Cast (high school and college), so there
are plenty of opportunities available. Also, this production
will feature several professional actors who will serve as ‘Teaching
Artists’ and mentors for the program participants,
so the participants will have an opportunity to work side-by-side
with Equity and Non-Equity pros! Rehearsals will be in San
Diego, in the Serra Mesa and Carmel Valley areas and approximately
one to two weeknights (plus one Saturday afternoon) per week.
For more information on rehearsal schedules, please see our
website: www.cyctheatre.com.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
CALIFORNIA YOUTH CONSERVATORY produces
youth theatre productions of very high quality while at
the same time maintaining a fun, yet structured environment
where young performers can expect to learn something about
stagecraft. We maintain extremely high standards of fairness
and non-political casting. Opportunities are offered on
the basis of an individual’s audition,
attitude and conduct—never on ‘connections’ or ‘favors.’ Our
expectations are high, and so is the quality of our product.
We are very family-oriented and seek the help of parents
whenever possible. Our participants are instructed only by
experienced, bona-fide professionals with impressive resumes
and high levels of skill and achievement.
