This class will have a maximum of 12 students.
D. W. Jacobs
Co-founder of San Diego Repertory Theatre. Author and director of
R. Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE.
The
actor is a psycho-physical athlete. This workshop will develop the
major "muscle groups" of imagination and expression that must be worked
and conditioned on a daily basis. The focus will be on learning through
constant practice. Designed for experienced actors and performers who
want to refresh their whole approach to their work, this class will
help each actor develop a daily practice best suited to their needs and
goals. By using poetry to train the voice and imagination, movement
exercises to train the responsiveness of body and mind, and
improvisations to sharpen the instincts for playing relentless
intentions, this inter-disciplinary approach can help fine tune the
work methods of any actor.
D.
W. Jacobs co-founded San Diego Repertory Theatre with Sam Woodhouse in
1976, where he worked for 20 years as Artistic Director. While at the
Rep, he spent two years researching and designing the curriculum that
was then used to train the Rep’s Equity Acting Company from 1984 to
1986. Since leaving the Rep, he has privately coached acting students
in Los Angeles. The students he has coached for grad school auditions
have found themselves placed at Julliard, A.R.T., and the Naropa
Institute.

It
is our sincere desire to inspire actors to actively embrace their own
passion for the art and craft of acting that has brought them to us in
the first place. At the core of this work is the actor’s willingness to
take risks and allow spontaneity to supersede analysis . The focus of
the training is a balance between Scene Work AND Improvisation, a vital
skill for actors auditioning and performing in Feature Films and
Television. Actors are encouraged to think outside the intellectual
box, imagine beyond the script, and learn to play from their hearts and
develop their own personal style. The course requires regular
presentations of prepared scenes and monologues. Careful consideration
is given to relating the actor’s class work to the ever-changing
exigencies of a demanding profession. Consistent attendance is required
to get the most from this experience. Students will have an opportunity
present prepared material at one of our professional demo nights in LA.
We invite Agents, Managers, and Casting Directors to come watch the
actors and provide them with face to face feedback. These demonstration
nights are contingent up guest availability.

This
class will be geared toward beginning to intermediate
actors who wish to focus on basic acting techniques.
Advanced students should apply for the Advanced Class
which meets Mondays 2-5 pm.
Description:
EMPHASIS: Acting is challenging work.
It certainly does not seem as effortless from the inside
as it does when we watch someone very skilled do it.
Many very talented people do not realize that, like
any other skilled craftsman, the actor must consistently
shape and hone his/her work in order to gain access
to the best of it. In his TEN years teaching acting
professionally in Los Angeles and San Diego, Albert
Dayan has always made it a priority to create a comfortable
classroom environment that nonetheless challenges his
actors to seek out the best their work. In this workshop,
students will become familiar with many of the foundational
concepts of acting and begin to uncover their full
potential as performers.
CLASS STRUCTURE: Every session will
begin with a brief warm up followed by an exercise
or two aimed at introducing the students to some of
Albert’s concepts of acting. For the very first
class, students will be asked to perform a pre-prepared
monologue, which will be followed by a critique and
second performance. These monologues will be brought
back the following week and that process will repeat
itself. The remaining month of classes, students will
be paired together for two-person scene work, with
scenes chosen specifically to address each individual
actor’s
strengths and weaknesses.
You are strongly encouraged to attend
every session and to work as much as possible. Acting
is best learned on your feet. Also remember that your
scene partner is counting on you. Initial memorization
and rehearsal of the scenesis expected to take place
in one weeks’ time.
MATERIAL: For the most part, Albert
will suggest the scenes for the actors to work on,
though of course he will be very open to anything they
would like to suggest for themselves. Scenes should
be somewhere between five to seven minutes in length,
though this is flexible. In general, I prefer to err
on the side of brevity.
The number of actors in class is
limited. Open slots will be filled on a first come,
first served basis. Classes are for adults only.
ALBERT DAYAN has been teaching acting
in Los Angeles for ten years. His students have appeared
on the stages at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Utah
Shakespearean Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, Mark Taper
Forum, Geffen Theatre, Ahmanson, Red Cat, Odyssey Theatre,
and Boston Court, to name afew. They can also be seen
in numerous films and television shows, among them
Auto Focus, The Longest Yard, The Wedding Crashers,
Shrek 2, Men of Valor, “Rose Red”, “The
West Wing”, “Monk”, “Six
Feet Under”, “Dune”, “Law & Order”, “King
of Queens”, “JAG”, “Ally
McBeal”, “The X-Files”, and “3rd
Rock From the Sun”. Albert is a graduate of California
Institute of the Arts and a full partner in The Burglars
of Hamm - a well-known Los Angeles based
satirical group. He has been nominated for several
local theatre awards, including most recently an Ovation
Award and an LA Weekly Award. He writes, produces,
directs and performs theatre in Los Angeles.
"I have studied with Albert off and on for nearly
8 years, right around the time I joined AEA. He has
a keen eye for an actor's strengths and weaknesses.
Albert does not just make a scene better - he gives
you the tools and methods to make the next scene better
yourself. Albert continues to help me become a better
actor by challenging me to explore new depths while
never losing sight of the basics. I give him my highest
recommendation." -- Jason Heil
"Being a member of Albert Dayan's acting class
has made me a better actor. Albert's ability to assess
an actor's strengths and weaknesses provides for a
wonderful foundation on which to build new skills,
creative insights, and a confidence in how to approach
the craft. Albert's supportive encouragement has empowered
me to seek out and embrace new acting styles which
has assisted in making my work more grounded, real,
and true. I am so thankful that a dear friend of mine
more than nudged me into taking Albert's class. I would
highly recommend this class to actor's who are seeking
to improve their skills, who are open new avenues of
how to approach the work, and to those people who enjoy
working with other actors in a nurturing and supportive
environment." -- Ralph Johnson

EMPHASIS:
Acting is personal. Things that frighten you in life
undoubtedly frighten you on stage. In an ideal performance,
your body doesn’t know that it’s acting;
it doesn’t know that you don’t have to
pay for THESE sins; it doesn’t know that THIS
vulnerability belongs to your imagination. As a result,
if you have been acting for any length of time, you
long ago developed some sort of routine that provides
for you a measure of personal safety. This is as it
should be. The mechanisms you’ve created are
much of what makes you a good actor. They’ve
kept you grounded, allowed you to make confident choices,
etc. They are genuine strengths and are not to be taken
lightly or simply discarded. But being human, you have
also found ways of protecting yourself with these very
same mechanisms. Choices uncomfortable to you are unconsciously
overlooked or avoided and safer, less appropriate ones
take their place. To complicate things, chances are
you are very good when making these comfortable choices.
They are likely the aspects of your work that draw
the most applause. However, these are also the habits
that fix you in one place, keeping you a good actor
who’s no better than you were the day before.
Seeing these limiting habits in an actor and urging
him or her to move beyond them is my strength as a
teacher and will be my primary focus in class.
CLASS STRUCTURE: Every session begins with a brief warm
up followed by two-person scene-work and the occasional
monologue or exercise. Material is performed, followed
by a critique and a second performance. Then, depending
on the state of things, I will either ask you to bring
the scene back the following week or to choose a new
partner and begin again. You are strongly encouraged
to attend every available class and to work as much as
possible. Acting is best learned on your feet. Also remember
that your scene partner is counting on you. The average
scene has a shelf life of about two to three weeks. Initial
memorization and rehearsal is expected to take place
in one weeks’ time.
MATERIAL: Students usually choose their own material,
though occasionally I’ll suggest something I think
you should work on. Scenes ought to be somewhere between
six to ten minutes in length, though this is flexible.
In general, it is better to err on the side of brevity.
The number of actors in class is limited. Open slots
will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Classes

"Carla Nell has an amazing gift and intuition as both an actor and

strongly encourage one to learn from her." Jabe Hammond
"Carla Nell is the type of director every actor should have the
opportunity to work with. She doesn't force her actors into her
vision. Rather, she embraces the actors instincts, the actors
talents, and the actors ideas and she crafts those elements with her
own instincts, talents and ideas yielding results of rich, full
performances, time and time again." Sky Soleil

"While working with Carla Nell on My House Was Collapsing Toward One
Side, I was amazed and impressed with the dedication she brought to the
piece. She made the experience collaborative and enjoyable.
Not only did the experience sharpen my skills as an actor, it enriched
my existence as a human on this planet. For this I will always be
grateful." Delia Hulke
"Carla has a knack for bringing out the humanity in her plays and in
her actors. The product is a more genuine and sincere actor. Her
techniques are clear and effective at helping actors see an organized
path through this complex art form. It is in this "seeing" that Carla's

"Acting
is doing what the character does, simply and truthfully under an
imaginary circumstance." If you look up act in the dictionary,
you will find, "to do, to perform an action." That's all acting
breaks down to. Rather than trying to figure out how to say
something or "act" a certain way, it is much better just to figure out
what it is you are doing and than do it. There will be no
delivering of lines in my class, but rather listen, having a point of
view, and affecting a change in the other person. A bad actor
acts cold a good actor gets warm.
I
will teach you to make educated choices in scenes, tell you how to
identify scene types, audition strategies, and to know what the
character wants and how to go about getting it. I will also teach
you the business of acting. In my class we will work on scene
study and developing cold reading skills. I have worked in film and
television, and I am also a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
I
have studied under some very influential coaches, including on set
coach John Homa, who I've studied with for many years. These
coaches have coached the likes of Jena Malone, Jennifer-Love Hewitt,
Dakota Fanning, Kirsten Dunst, Freddie Prinze Jr., Evan Rachel Wood,
and Eric Balfour. In addition to working in film and on
television I've also done shows at the World Famous Improv in Hollywood
and done a segment for Conan O'Brian. |

Action Focus Workshop exercises on the physical and sensory awareness
of the actor, giving the actor the freedom to explore not just with the
text but with the character and their history within the confines of
their immediate surrounding. Students learn as to ‘why’ things are said
as much as to ‘what’ is being said. They learn to find the
vulnerability within the character and themselves to bring truth to the
character in their circumstances. They learn to differentiate between
the ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ of the character by learning to reach their
objectives through their actions or inactions. Each class begins with
focus & relaxation exercises and works through objective &
sensory exercises. The foundation of acting is the same whether it’s
stage or on-camera. Only difference is the application. This class is
geared for on-camera acting utilizing a variety of methods of technique
appropriate for the situation.

Basically
I work one on one with your child and you whether it’s a class setting
or a Private Session to get him/her to understand what to do and what
everything means. For someone her/his age getting you to understand is
even more important so I strongly advise that you be in all sessions.
The private sessions are $125.00 per hour and usually we set up a once
a week time. I am currently running about 12 of these but I can
probably make a time for you if you are interested.
Lastly I want you to understand my philosophy with kids. I think they
have natural desire to want to live in imaginary worlds and feel
things. Children’s feelings are very strong and never wrong. Their
behavior may be inappropriate but never the feeling that brings the
behavior about. This is their intuition and stomping on it will be a
great detriment to them and make them complain about all of us to their
therapist in 25 years!! I am very careful to make sure that nothing
that I do takes priority over your child being a healthy and happy
child. I do not work with parents trying to live out their dreams
through their children or forcing their children to do something that
they are not interested in. If you agree with this philosophy then lets
talk some more.

is looking forward to getting back to class with you. Thanks again,
you're awesome! – May Strickland
Richie Hicks:
Just booked Penecostal D'Elmo, a Damon Wayans web project.
This is a very animated, over the top, comedic role. I know the work
he's been doing with Billy helped him book this. He's more able to tap
into a broader range of highs and lows now. And to let himself go and
be totally goofy... :) – Richard Hicks Sr.
Garrett Geoghegan:
Garrett booked a Round Table Pizza commercial at his first commercial
audition! Many thanks to Rick for his fun and informative classes and
his patience teaching Garrett.

This
is the acting class. That is an intensive series of working sessions to
install the mindset of the working actor but do it under the most
difficult conditions that you will face as an actor, the audition. If
you can love what you do there, you can do it anywhere. That one starts
with a two-hour intro session with me. Next you will take the class and
see the results of the different approach. The first class and the
intro session are free. After that the class will rotate through
Monologs, Commercials, Frozen readings, Improv, etc. I work with each
student individually and everyone works every week. Don’t miss a week.
You’ll miss a lot!
ALSO AVAILABLE:
Private Sessions/ Adults: I will work with you on whatever it is that
you want to work on. Bring in an audition, let me give you a monologue,
you’re stressed and need perspective, you have marketing questions, you
want to work auditions like crazy, you want to go over in detail how to
best prepare or memorize material, etc. I am here for you.
Sunday and Mondays before 5PM

AA Memebers first 1/2 hour free
What are people saying about this class?
Jeffery
Krebs - "Half Past Dead 2" (Full Length Feature) will be released on
May 15, 2007. Originally scheduled to go straight to home video, it
will now have a theatrical release!! I play a prison inmate not to be
toyed with.
Just
wrapped "Missionary Man," (Full Length Feature) a modern western shot
on location in Dallas, Texas and starring Dolph Lundren. I play a
troubled, lonely man injured from a gunshot wound. My interaction w/
Ryder (Dolph Lundgren) propels the climax of the movie in a very
emotional scene. In this scene, I actually lost it emotionally and
broke down, sobbing uncontrollably...and this was not planned. When the
scene was over, Dolph had tears in his eyes and stated that it was "the
best scene in the film so far." Thank you Billy for giving me the
tools, and the courage, to experience things I have never allowed
myself to experience before.
I just got cast in "Am I Blue?" (Full Length Feature) to be shot at the end of May, 2007.
Billy, you continue to take me to new levels and for that I am grateful. - Jeff
ANTONIO JARAMILLO - Just Shot: Leading role on the new Tyler Perry
Series of Meet the Browns(10 Episodes)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I owe you so much Billy! - Antonio Jaramillo

Gigi
-This year has been a great commercial year for me. I filmed a national
commercial for BigLots, which made me SAG eligible, and five other
local commercials. I also filmed two industrial videos, one of them for
Jafra Skincare, and I booked and filmed two short films--"Cookie," in
which I played a leading role, and "The Apparatus," in which I had a
supporting role.
I also am booked to work on two other projects already before the month is over.
Although
I come in and out of your class, your advice and lessons are always
with me--and it has shown this year. My goals for next year are to
audition for more film roles. As soon as I finish school, I look
forward to returning to class.
Thanks for your wonderful teachings.

If
you are serious about acting, you should know about the drama studio
that is now making instruction in the "method" available to qualified
adults in San Diego.
For decades, the
techniques of Method Acting taught by the legendary Lee Strasberg have
been practiced by many of the most outstanding performers in theater,
film and television. The profound influence of the Method is seen in
the work of such greats as Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Dustin Hoffman,
Marthe Keller, Paul Newman, Al Pacino and Shelley Winters.
Now,
professional training in Lee Strasberg's famed Method is available for
the first time in the San Diego area. These classes are being conducted
under the personal direction of acting coach Allen Bridgwater. In
addition to numerous film and stage credits, Allen Bridgwater's
professional background includes four years' of study with Lee
Strasberg at his Theater Institute in Hollywood.
Strasberg's
Method is best described as a "method of working" for actors. He
perfected and modified principles and exercises originally developed in
the late 19th century by Konstantin Stanislavsky of the Moscow Arts
Theater.
Before acceptance, your
suitability for the program will be evaluated in an interview with Mr.
Bridgwater. Strong reading skills are an important prerequisite.
Openings are limited.
The studio,
located in San Diego, is modest. The work is intensive. And no promises
are made. There are no graduation certificates or guarantees of future
work. Study of the Method is an on-going process, not coursework that
can be condensed or mastered in a pre-set span of time. Each
participant progresses at his own pace, receiving constant
individualized instruction. Fees are charged at the rate of $300 for
each 12-week period, and $15 for class audit. |

"The actor must become the character, his emotions real, not pretended, the action happening, not indicated."
This
is what acting is and that is exactly what we are after at The
Rehearsal Room. We are concerned with one thing: Truth. The truth of
the moment.
The
Rehearsal Room is the only acting school in San Diego that truly
teaches the art of "Method" acting. The instructor, Carey Scott, is the
only teacher in San Diego to have studied extensively under one of the
masters. Carey was trained under legendary teacher Stella Adler, one of
the founding members of The Group Theatre, teacher of Marlon Brando,
Robert DeNiro, Warren Beatty, Richard Dreyfuss, Harvey Keitel, Martin
Sheen, Ellen Burstyn, James Caan, Benicio Del Toro, Andy Garcia, Kevin
Kline and many others, and was the only American to study under
Konstantin Stanislavski, the inventor of "Method" acting.
Carey's classes are based on Stella's teachings. The concepts he learned from her in New York and Los Angeles from 1986 to 1992.
Carey
will teach you to strip away all the unessential baggage you bring to
your work and bring it down to the bare truth. So you aren't acting
anymore, just being.
There
are no gimmicks in this class. No talk of acting being easy or simple.
This is an intense scene study class for serious actors concerned with
truly learning the craft of acting. Exactly the same class as the
actors listed above took.
In
addition to scene study, the class also covers auditioning, monologues,
Shakespeare, cold & freezing readings, sense memory, emotional
recall and other techniques.
The
class does have an emphasis on film and television so we do cover
on-camera techniques (without the use of a camera - the point is to
forget that it's there), on-set etiquette, pictures & resumes and
everything you need to know to run your career.
Trained
under legendary master teacher Stella Adler, Carey has been a
professional actor for over 20 years. He has appeared in over 70 films
and tv shows as well as dozens of plays in New York and Los Angeles.
Some of his co-stars include Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman,
Johnny Depp, Whoopi Goldberg, Madonna, Tom Hanks, Alan Alda, Haley Joel
Osment, Jennifer Aniston, Martin Lawrence, Alec Baldwin and many others.
Carey
has been teaching at his own acting school, The Rehearsal Room, in Los
Angeles and San Diego for the past 20 years. He was also the on-set
acting coach for the cast of the NBC series High Tide, the Warner
Brothers feature film Forest Warrior, the Trimark feature film
Overkill, and the New Line feature film Ripper Man, all of which he
also appeared in.
Carey's
film The Bells of Innocence premiered at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival
and most recently Carey starred in and co-directed the feature film
Birdie & Bogey starring Janine Turner (Northern Exposure,
Cliffhanger). Carey is next traveling to Bulgaria to co-star in the
feature film The Dreamers with Jeremy Irons and Monica Belucci.
Carey has been a member of SAG, AFTRA and Equity for over 20 years. |
