Helping our Community

"There are so many people who helped get this thing off the ground that it's hard to know even where to begin. Just promoting the auditions was challenging. Of all possible outlets, only the Actors Alliance of San Diego stepped up (beyond the norm) to try to help us take that forts step. We will always be grateful."

Steve Irlen, Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito, Director of "First Class"- a national musical film shot in San Diego for the Boys & Girls Club

The Actors Alliance is committed to supporting its community and creating collaborations with other non-profit organizations to enrich both the members of the Actors Alliance and the community at large. The Actors Alliance also strives to educate children through the use of theatre, music and dance. Click on the links below to find out more about our outreach efforts.

Annual Holiday Gift Drive (Winter)

Each holiday season, the Actors Alliance calls on its members to support those in need in the Normal Heights community, where our office is located. We have teamed up with the Jewish Family Service, a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthen and preserve family life, and to assist children, adults, and families in developing and maintaining their maximum human potential. They do this by providing a variety of services including (but not limited to) Child Abuse Prevention Education, Parenting Education, Family Violence Intervention Program, Outreach to Holocaust Survivors, and Emergency Services.

During the holiday season, we donate to their "Support The Family" Holiday Gift Drive, which arranges holiday gifts for families in need. Each year, the JFS falls short in gifts for teenagers. Therefore, The Actors Alliance has committed donating brand new teen-appropriate gifts to their "Support The Family" program. Last year, we were able to donate 3 large boxes of gifts to the organization, which were used by more than 50 families.

Annual Spring Clean Rummage Sale (Spring/Summer)

Each spring as a fundraiser for AASD, we ask our members to go through their homes and collect any items they'd like to donate for a collective rummage sale. The items are then put up for sale to the general public, with cash proceeds going to the Actors Alliance. However, each year AASD is left with hundreds of items that could not be sold, including clothing, shoes, sporting equipment, office supplies and equipment, household items, glassware, small kitchen appliances, CDs, movies, etc. The Actors Alliance, in turn, donates the items to a group of local non-profit organizations who lists these items on their "In-Kind Wish List." This year, we were able to donate 20 boxes/bags worth of items to the following organizations (click to view their websites):

Center for Community Solutions- It is the mission of the Center for Community Solutions to create violence-free communities by building bridges between people; and to foster a safe and healthy environment for all individuals and families through education, therapeutic services, advocacy and cultural and community services.

United Cerebral Palsy- It is the mission of United Cerebral Palsy to advance the independence, productivity and citizenship of people affacted by cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

Art Survive- Art Survive is committed to providing a variety of artistic programs and projects dedicated to the relief and healing of children and their families facing adversities.

Junior Theatre- Now in its 55th year, Junior Theatre is committed to providing engaging, innovative, high-quality theatre education and productions for children of all cultural heritages, ages, abilities and levels of interest.

Actors Alliance Festival (Summer)

Each year, this Actors Alliance program is funded by the San Diego Foundation Dr. Seuss Fund at the recommendation of Mrs. Audrey Geisel. This funding allows us the freedom to give back to the arts community that support our student members and the community at large. Each year, we are able to donate 100% of student ticket proceeds to Young Audiences of San Diego, local chapter of the nation's leading arts education organization. Young Audiences (YA) has been awarded the National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest honor for the arts community for "working with educational systems, the arts community and the private and public sectors to make the arts an essential part of all children's education."

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk (Autumn)

The Actors Alliance embarking on a very important mission- to work with the American Cancer Society to raise money as a part of their "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Walk. The American Cancer Society is the nation’s largest nongovernmental supporter of breast cancer research. Since 1993 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has raised more than $100 million in additional funding to support the Society’s breast cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services. I personally know 3 women in my life who have suffered from breast cancer, and I am making a personal plea to every AASD member to do everything they can to support this cause.

This year, the 4.5 mile Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk was October 19, 2003 at 8:30am in Balboa Park. We created "Team Actors Alliance" which boasted 5 walkers and raised over $1500. Next year we hope to double our participation and fundraising efforts.

The American Cancer Society is always accepting donations. All donations are tax deductible, and your receipt can be printed from the website once your payment goes through.
